Veterinary Chiropractic and Acupuncture for Horses

Back and neck problems are common amongst horses just like ourselves. They can be recognised from a whole range of symptoms from obvious soreness when being saddled up or when being brushed along the back, through to having a poor appetite or diarrhea.

Damage can occur through falls, ill fitting tack, bad posture or stress from sore or unbalanced lower limbs or bad rider posture. Most of the time the damage is minor and heals quickly. Damage causes the brain to restrict the movement of the vertebrae by tightening up the muscles around the vertebrae while the joints heal.

The chiropractic and acupuncture affect the motion and health of the joints of the spine, and the tension of the spinal and limb muscles and fascia (the protective sheet that holds large muscles together). In doing so, they return the messages to and from the brain and the body’s muscles and other tissues back to normal. This improves co-ordination, and improves the action of the muscles.
Chatswood is privileged to engage the services of renowned Spinal Veterinarian Dr Ian Bidstrup. Ian was raised on a farm in North Central Victoria and graduated with a Veterinary Science degree from Melbourne University in 1980. After 10 years in veterinary practice his dissatisfaction with spinal treatment options led him to pursue training in chiropractic and acupuncture. Since the early 90’s Ian has completed an American Chiropractic Association certificate in Veterinary Chiropractic, an International certificate in Veterinary Acupuncture, a Graduate diploma in Animal Chiropractic and a Masters degree in Chiropractic Science (Animal), both via RMIT University. For the past 10 years Ian has had a full time practice treating spinal problems in horses.
